PAS DE DEUX ~ AKA KONDO and CHENGWU GUO
with FIONA TONKIN (Artistic Associate & Principal Ballet Mistress)
This evening was a real first for the Ballet Society as it was the first time that Fiona had interviewed dancers and the first time that we had had the pleasure of hearing from Aka and Chen since they had become Principal Artists with The Australian Ballet.
It very quickly became evident that there was a really strong rapport between the three artists and the resultant interview was particularly interesting. Fiona’s questions were addressed to both dancers and this highlighted the differences in personalities of Aka and Chen.
Aka came across as warm, calm, strong and inspired by being a Principal Artist. Chen presented as warm also but very confident and outgoing who was excited by his promotion and the opportunity to ‘try anything’ to learn the art of artistry. They all had a great sense of humour which never goes astray! Fiona seemed to understand what both young Principals’ needed to fulfil the responsibilities of their positions and they quite openly expressed their respect for their experienced coach, who had brought such artistry in her years as a Principal Artist with the Company not so long ago.
Members of the audience did not want the conversation between the three to end, but, of course, it did to much applause. A DVD of both dancers performing was then viewed to even more applause.
We all then had a tasty supper with wine in the Dancers Deli.
